U6 FAQs
Q) How many children are in a team?
Teams usually have six players with four on the field at a time.
Q) When will I find out which team my child is in?
Registration closes 17th Feb 2012. Team allocations will commence on the weekend of 18th &19th Feb. All requests need to be emailed to the age co-ordinator prior to the 17th Feb 2012. Team allocations will be advised in March.
Q) Where are games played?
All U6 games are held at Rex Jackson Oval Helensburgh (Children start to travel to other locations in the U7 age group)
Q) What time are games played?
All games are at 10am (unless adequate field space is unavailable due to scheduled matches for older age groups – in which case you will be notified)
Q) What date is the first game?
Saturday 14th April 2012
Q) My child played U6 last year – so do they play U7 this year?
Children born in 2006 and 2007 play in the U6 competition.
Children born in 2005 play in the U7 competition.
Q) Who is my coach and manager?
Each team will need to nominate their own coach and manager.
Q) What day is training?
Each team will nominate their own training time.
Q) I can’t coach the team – I’ve never played soccer…
The U6s play SSG (small sided games) which is a modified form of soccer. There are very few rules. The main role of the coach is to teach the kids to kick a ball and to have some fun. Over the season the children’s skills and confidence will grow.
Q) What are the rules of SSG?
The rules are simple and can be found via a link on our website.
Q) How long do games go for?
Games are two 15 minute halves with a short break in between.
Q) What does a manager do?
A manager fills out the team sheet on game day and emails the age co-ordinator if the team needs to forfeit.
Q) What does a coach do?
A coach spends 30-45mins kicking a ball around on the oval with six 5-6 year olds once a week. Coaches usually also act as game leader on Saturdays, but if you’re not confident with this you can always offload this job onto one of the other parents in your team who can’t get to training due to work commitments but is happy to help out on Saturdays.
Q) What do I need to buy?
Socks– can be purchased from the club for $10. They can be purchased from the canteen on match days.
Black shorts– can be purchased either from the club (for $20) or elsewhere.
Shin pads– are compulsory for games and training. They are available at Rebel.
Soccer boots– a limited number of pre-loved boots are available from the canteen. “It’s a Shoe Thing” at Helensburgh stocks soccer boots or purchase elsewhere.
Q) It’s raining. Is training cancelled?
Go to the website and click on the “Grounds” tab.
Click on the link “Wollongong Council Ground Status”.
If Rex Jackson Oval is closed, then training is off.
Training is not allowed on the oval if council has closed the grounds.
Q) It’s raining on match day. Is the game off?
Check the website homepage after 7am in the morning on game day for cancellations. Games may be cancelled because either Wollongong Council has closed the grounds or because Football South Coast have called the games off. In the case of U6s, games may be cancelled at the U6 Co-ordinator’s discretion.
Do not assume that because it is raining that the game is off.
Where possible the U6 Co-ordinator will text coaches and managers if the games are cancelled, who will then advise their players. Please do not contact the U6 Co-ordinator directly.
Team and individual requests can be made on Rego Day or emailed to Lesa Paine.
Please send team nominations and individual requests to: lesarae@bigpond.com
NB: Nominations will NOT be accepted after 17th Feb 2012
